Dr. McKee's

Seminar: Emergency & Incident Management

A formal syllabus will be available here soon.

This course will require you to take several courses designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  You can accomplish this through FEMA's independent study courses, or through classroom training if your agency offers it.  Some modules have interactive web courses with audio and video components; you may use these, but be warned: they require a fast internet connection.  All I care about is that you earn a certificate for each module.

FEMA maintains an extensive website for training.  Materials and instructions for this course can be found on the FEMA Emergency Management Institute (EMI) website: http://www.training.fema.gov/emiweb/Is/crslist.asp

This course will be graded on your completion of five training modules.  You will earn a specified number of points for each certificate you send me.  I will accept certificates by e-mail (PDF format), Fax, regular mail, or presented in person.  Whichever way you choose, I must have the certificate by the deadline.  You will lose 2 points per 24 hour period that lapses between the deadline and when I receive your certificate.

The required training modules are as follows:

IS-100.LE - Introduction to the Incident Command System, I-100, for Law Enforcement  (Due 02/23/07)

IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents  (Due 03/09/07)

IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction  (Due 03/23/07)

IS-800.A National Response Plan (NRP), An Introduction (Due 04/06/07)

IS-235 Emergency Planning - Professional Development Series (Click for more details) (Due 04/20/07)

Each module is worth 20 points.  At the end of the semester, I will add up all of your points and that will be your grade for the course.  Passing all modules and submitting all of your certificates by the deadline will result in a grade of A for the course.  Not completing modules or completing them late will by EXTREMELY harmful to your grade.

For each unit above, you will need to download the study materials and the test.  Read each module carefully, working any exercises included in the text.  Once you have mastered the material, go online and submit your test answers to EMI.
